KINGSTON, NS - A Kingston couple got an early Christmas gift from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation: a cheque for $675,000.
James and Rita Manthorne are the province’s latest Set for Life winners.
The Kingston man said he got quite a surprise when he scratched a Set for Life ticket recently at the Greenwood Mall. His ticket had three Set for Life symbols, and when he put it through the machine, it said he was a major winner.
“I play Set for Life maybe a couple times a month. They just got some new tickets and they opened a new packet, and I thought I’d get one,” he said in a press release from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
The couple has had some smaller wins in the past.
“He usually comes home and says, ‘Here, this is for you,’ and gives me some money,” said Rita. “But, this time, he called me and said he won. That had never happened before. It threw me off.”
The Manthornes holiday wish list this year may look a little different. They plan to get a new truck, renovate their home and spend time with family over the holidays.
“We’re going to spoil our grandchildren,” Rita said.
Set for Life winners have the option of receiving $1,000 per week for 25 years or receiving a lump sum payment, and the couple decided to take the $675,000 cash.
