Championship matches highlight Battle of the Atlantic

Four championship matches and two challenge matches highlighted the Battle of the Atlantic arm wrestling competition May 3 at Dooly’s in New Minas.

In the right lightweight division, challenger Artie MacMaster of Truro defeated reigning champion Tim Wrigley of Middleton 6-0.

Wrigley, the challenger in the left lightweight division, then turned the tables on champion Jim McGeoghegan from PEI in a match that also ended 6-0.

The right and left middleweight challenges both featured the same two competitiors: Mark Crouse of Beaconsfield, Annapolis Co. and Ryan Purdy from Halifax.

In the right-handed match, Crouse, the middleweight champion, retained his title, besting Purdy 5-1. In the left-handed match, Crouse topped Purdy 6-0 to capture the vacant championship.

Two challenge matches saw sixth-ranked Melvin Peach defeat fourth-ranked Matthew Purdy 6-0 in the left middleweight division and fifth-ranked Jim McGeoghegan blank unranked Darren Taylor 6-0 in the right lightweight division.

In the amateur competition, in right lightweight, Daniel Martel of PEI placed first, Brian Coffill of Beaverbank second, Terrence Wrigley of Middleton third and Chris Rafuse of Windsor fourth.

In left lightweight, Daniel Martell was first, with Christopher Scott of Sackville second, Chris Rafuse third and Ed MacLellan of Hilden fourth.

In left heavyweight, Joey Clayton of Middleton was first, Christopher Scott second, Tim McGeoghegan of Belfast, PEI third and Terrence Wrigley fourth.

In right elite 3, Ed MacLellan was first, Matthew Purdy of Malagash second, Joey Clayton third and Jim McGeoghegan fourth. In right elite 2, Shaun Deveau of Yarmouth was first, Chris Scott of Sackville second, Mark Crouse third and Ryan Purdy fourth.

In left elite 3, Artie MacMaster placed first, Jim McGeoghegan second, Gary Laird of Torbrook third and Tim Wrigley fourth. In left elite 2, Mark Crouse was first, Shaun Deveau second, Chris Scott third and Matthew Purdy fourth.
