The Annapolis Valley Exhibition is less than two weeks away, but before the parade and official opening ceremonies on August 11 in Lawrencetown, a handful of young women will already have worked hard to represent their communities in events leading up to the coronation of Miss Valley Ex 2008.

“This year there are seven beautiful young ladies vying for the title of Miss Valley Ex 2008,” said Karen O’Neil, pageant co-chair.

O’Neil, along with Ashley Taylor, having been working with the contestants, and on Sunday, Aug. 3 the public will get a chance to mingle with the princesses and reigning Miss Valley Ex Brianna Shaw at the Princess Tea to be held at the Arts & Crafts Building on the exhibition grounds.

“Brianna has represented the Annapolis Valley Exhibition with dignity, elegance, and pride,” said O’Neil as she thanked the Paradise resident on behalf of the exhibition board of directors and management.

The tea begins at 2 p.m. with the girls entertaining and debuting in public for the first time. There will also be special entertainment by Ginnaya Daigle, a three-year-old step dance machine.

The final coronation ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 12 during exhibition week.

This year’s princesses include Chelsea Lynch, Shelby Spurr, Allison Bezanson, Katherine Banks, Briege Doiron, Rebecca Louise Bruce, and Christie Tidman. Following are their profiles:

Chelsea Lynch

My name is Chelsea Lynch, daughter of William and Ann Marie Lynch. I attend Middleton Regional High School. I’m 16 years old and I work at Avery’s Farm Market. In my spare time I like to dance, play hockey, rugby, soccer, and volleyball. When I am finished school, I would like to get into environmental law or medicine.

Shelby Spurr

My name is Shelby Nicole Spurr and I am the 17-year-old daughter of Kelly Spurr and Edward Bent of Bridgetown. I currently attend Bridgetown Regional High School and will be entering Grade 12 in September. I enjoy various hobbies including swimming, music, travel, meeting new people, working with children, acting, playing piano, photography, and spending time with family and friends when I have time after lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons.

After high school I plan on pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree and a career in pediatrics or international development work for the UN.

My name is Katherine Banks, daughter of Lisa and Murray Banks, Bricton. I attend Middleton Regional High School as a Grade 12 student. In school I am involved in many clubs and committees, and as of next year will be the head of the recreation committee. I am active in my community as well, and enjoy volunteering. I am president and hostess of the Misty Trails 4-H Club and am a junior executive of Annapolis County 4-H council. I am employed at Pasta Jax & Ribs Restaurant as well as with Debra Shaffener’s Professional Dog Grooming. In the future I plan to attend the NSAC to achieve a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, majoring in animal science.

My other hobbies include ballet, belly dancing, summer soccer, painting, reading, and caring for my farm animals. When I graduate in June, I plan to study and become a teacher specializing in math, social studies, and environment sciences.
